Northern Cape Sting Op: 9 arrested during crackdown on illegal drug trafficking

The Northern Cape Police

Northern Cape Police, as part of the multi-disciplinary illegal mining team, launched Operation Vala Umgodi, targeting drug-related crimes in Postmasburg. The operation, led by intelligence, resulted in the arrest of nine men aged between 20 and 48 years old for various offenses including illegal possession of drugs, ammunition and suspected stolen property.

Detailing the outcome of the raid on Friday, Sergeant Molefi Shemane, the police spokesperson, stated: “Information led to the raid on identified drug houses on Friday, May 3, 2024. During the operation, nine (9) male suspects were arrested between 20 and 20 years old. and aged 48 were arrested for illegal possession of suspected drugs with an estimated street value of R22,000, possession of ammunition and possession of suspected stolen goods.” The loot from the operation included not only drugs, but also cash believed to be proceeds of crime, mobile phones and items of concern such as suspected stolen South African Defense Force (SANDF) uniforms, along with gas pistols and ammunition.

The crackdown marks a major victory for local law enforcement agencies in their ongoing fight against drug-related crimes, underscoring the effectiveness of their intelligence-led operations. The seized items, especially the ammunition and SANDF uniforms, underline the potential link between drug trafficking and more dangerous criminal activity.

Pending their day in court, those arrested are expected to be arraigned at the Postmasburg Magistrates Court soon. The move marks the beginning of legal proceedings against the suspects, who have been found undermining the safety and security of the community through their illegal activities.

Lt. Gen. Koliswa Otola, the Provincial Commissioner, commended the team’s efforts in making the streets safer by removing drugs and weapons. Stressing the importance of community involvement in crime prevention, she said: “We encourage communities to continue reporting illegal activities to police.” Her call to action reinforces the crucial role that public cooperation plays in fighting crime and maintaining law and order.
