Embarrassing – BBC Sport pundit comments before AND then on Burnley 1 Newcastle 4 reality

Interesting to look at the point of view first AND then look at the reality from this BBC Sport pundit, with Saturday’s match at Turf Moor.

The final score is Burnley 1 Newcastle 4.

Chris Sutton had plenty to say before the match and then also reflected on what he saw in real life.

Sutton is there personally working for BBC Sport at Turf Moor.

FOR:

Chris Sutton in conversation with BBC Sport – May 3, 2024:

“I’m at this match for 5 Live and I’m really looking forward to it because both teams have hit some form…I have to say I admire the way Burnley have continued this season.

“Vincent Kompany’s side should have beaten Manchester United last week, but they still gave themselves the chance to top the table with three games to go.

“They will throw everything into this game, while Newcastle are in contention for sixth place and will be in contention for that.

“I love what Alexander Isak is doing for the Magpies, but like his teammate Anthony Gordon, his numbers dip when they are on the road.

“Both players should get the chance to improve on their away performances on Saturday, but I don’t think Newcastle will have it all their way.

“Prediction: Burnley 3 Newcastle 3”

THE REALITY:

Chris Sutton in conversation with BBC Sport – May 5, 2024:

“That’s shameful from Burnley.

“The Burnley full-backs have left their area all afternoon and Newcastle have brutally exploited them.

“Isak hits that into the roof of the net and all the Burnley fans leave.

“They know the Burnley team has the air of someone who is doomed.

“Burnley were in good form before today but today was brutal and I can’t argue for them staying up.”

So what to make of what the BBC Sport man said?

I think we see this far too often, with so many pundits really speaking to the opposition beforehand and telling us why they’re going to win, or at least that Newcastle United won’t win. Then when Eddie Howe’s side play well and take the opponent apart, it suddenly becomes about how bad the other team was/is, and not how good Newcastle were.

To be fair to Burnley, they started well and threw everything at it, BUT once Newcastle got their passing, movement and running with the ball going, they tore Kompany’s side apart after about 15 minutes.

Man U were lucky to draw at home to Burnley the week before and yet the Clarets just couldn’t coexist with United at Turf Moor yesterday. I think this is the real story of this latest drubbing handed out by NUFC. So much attacking threat and only Man City and Arsenal have scored more than Newcastle’s 78 PL goals. Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak are at the heart of everything that is good about the WEG attacking threat at Turf Moor.

The BBC Sport expert expected in advance that the home team would score three goals.

In 38 games against Premier League opponents this season (in league and cups), Burnley had scored three goals in just one match against Sheffield United. Burnley managed 5-0 at home and 4-1 away, but it’s worth pointing out that Sheffield United scored a whopping 97 goals (now 100!) against another club in a PL season.

In their 36 other games against Premier League opposition, Burnley have scored two or fewer goals. Although their form had improved after a dismal twenty defeats and just three wins in the first 27 PL matches this season, the fact is that, apart from a 4-1 win at Sheffield United two weeks before the NUFC match, their other four of In their last five games, Burnley had scored just three goals, including just one at home to Wolves and the same against Brighton at Turf Moor.

Meanwhile, Newcastle had conceded twice to Palace, who were playing very well, but in the other three of their last four games, Eddie Howe’s side had only conceded one goal. Clean sheets at Fulham and the home of Spurs, with Sheffield United scoring the early goal the Saturday before.

Only Sheffield United had scored fewer than Burnley’s 38 goals and no one has scored so few at home. Burnley have scored just 17 goals at Turf Moor in 17 home games in the PL, while conceding 37. Those figures have now scored 18 and have conceded 41 at home so far. .
