ORIGINAL STORY (May 1, 2024)

Gueydan, LA (KPEL News) – ATM thieves have wreaked havoc in southern Louisiana parishes. They’ve severely damaged businesses in St. Landry, Acadia, Iberia, St. Martin, and this week they added Vermilion Parish to the list. As you will see below, the problem is not limited to Louisiana.

Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon has issued an appeal for information regarding the latest ATM theft that occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 1, in Gueydan. The store they targeted is owned by Gueydan police chief Cru Delcambre.

To date, there had been no ATM thefts in Vermilion Parish. The thieves follow the same pattern. Two people steal a heavy-duty pickup truck and then use a chain hooked to it to rip an ATM from the business, destroying the facade and often the interior of the store. The trucks are not always stolen from the parish where the ATM theft occurs. For example, the suspects stole a truck in Lafayette Parish to commit the other crime at a bank in Iberia Parish.

Law enforcement agencies from all parishes are working together to find those responsible, and they believe there may be a gang of thieves working together. Only one person has been arrested in connection with an ATM theft in Cecilia. St. Martin Parish Sheriff Beckett Breaux says the other perpetrator has been identified, but no new arrest has been reported.

After responding to the scene, officers were notified that someone had spotted a damaged Dodge pickup in a field off Elliot Road. When they found the vehicle, the ATM and building materials from the store were in the bed. They also discovered that the truck had indeed been stolen.
