Tennis Central Men: #7 (7) Tennessee vs. #3 (2) Texas

STILWATER, Okla. The seventh-seeded Tennessee men’s tennis team is set to take on No. 2 seed Texas in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Thursday, May 16, at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The first service is scheduled for 5:00 PM ET (4:00 PM CT).

FINAL TIMEOUT

The Vols pulled off a gritty 4-3 victory over No. 10 Florida State in the Super Regionals, fueled by a singles comeback. After dropping the colon, Shunsuke Mitsui puts UT on the board, crushing Loris Pourroy 6-2, 6-2 on court two. The Seminoles took a 3-1 lead with wins on courts six and five.

The Vols began chipping away at Florida State’s lead, starting with the top rankings Johannus Monday 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 4 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc at the top of the lineup. Filip Pieczonka secured a three-set win over Jamie Connell, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2, on court three to level the score at 3-all.

Angel Diaz fought Youcef Rihane in fourth place, dropping his first set in a tiebreak 6-7(7), then rebounding to take his second set, 6-4. The two traded points in the third set, resulting in a tiebreak at 6-all. The graduate battled to win 7-5, sending Tennessee to the Elite Eight.

SCOUTING TEXAS

Texas (25-3) is riding a 16-game winning streak and posting a perfect 7-0 record in conference play. The Longhorns were crowned the Big 12 regular season and tournament championships, defeating TCU 4-0 in the tournament final on April 21.

Second-ranked Eliot Spizzirri is 19-3 at first in singles, for a 14-4 record against ranked opponents this season. Micah Braswell, ranked fifth in the nation, is undefeated (17-0) in second place.

In doubles, Spizzirri and his partner, Siem Woldeab, are 8-5 as Texas’ top pair, with a 5-2 record against ranked duos in 2024. Perrier-Yves Bailly and Eshan Talluri are 11-4 at the number 2 position.

UT has a program record of 8-3 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships. The last time Tennessee appeared in the Round of Eight was in 2022, where it posted a 4-3 underdog victory over third-ranked Baylor to advance to the semifinals.



JO AND ANGEL AT NO. 1
The sixth-ranked duo of Monday and Diaz have a 19-5 record as a pair in 2023-24 and are 17-5 atop UT’s lineup. The two have an impressive 11-2 mark against their ranked opponents this season. Additionally, Tennessee is 13-2 when the two win in doubles.



MONDAY CONTINUES TO MAKE MOVES
With his straight-set victory over FSU’s No. 4 Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc, the No. 4 FSU has a stellar career record of 11-0 against opponents ranked in the top 10 on Monday. The senior is expected to face No. 2 seed Eliot Spizzirri Longhorns. in the quarterfinals on Thursday, and a win would tie his highest win over an opponent in his collegiate career. Monday defeated second-ranked Ethan Quinn of Georgia earlier in 2023.

Mitsui was exceptional at second in singles, going 20-5 in doubles matches while posting a 9-2 record against ranked opponents this season.
