Two men were lynched in Meghalaya’s East-West Khasi Hills district for allegedly trying to rape a 17-year-old girl yesterday, police said.

The incident was reported from Nongthliew village in eastern Western Khasi Hills.

The girl claimed that she was in her house when the duo attacked her with a knife and tried to rape her. Hearing her screams, neighbors gathered at the scene and detained the two, police said.

About 1,500 people then took them to a nearby community center and attacked them there.

When police arrived on the scene, the crowd did not allow officials to take them into custody, sources said.

While police were negotiating with community leaders, the crowd entered the community center and beat the suspects. “The duo could be taken out of the venue only after the crowd was done with them,” a police officer said.

They were rushed to hospital for treatment, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

A case has been registered and investigation is underway, officials said. The two men worked as laborers in Nongthliew, police said.
