Apple AirPods 4: release date, specs, price and everything we know so far

It’s fair to say that Apple AirPods, both the pro and non-pro versions, are some of the most popular earbuds on the market and have been since the launch of the first AirPods in 2016. So rumors that the Apple AirPods 4 it’s doing rounds will make fans very excited.

The third-generation AirPods launched in October 2021, so leaks surrounding the fourth-generation model are based on Apple following roughly a two-year cycle, which is roughly the time it took to upgrade from the second generation.

But Apple is currently keeping very quiet on this matter, leaving us with nothing more than a cocktail of speculation from trusted industry analysts and our hopes and dreams.

Here’s what we know so far about Apple AirPods 4…

Apple AirPods 4: What we know and rumors so far

The biggest rumor that seems to have a high degree of truth is that Apple is preparing to launch two different AirPods 4 models: a regular version and a cheaper alternative. This is supported by industry analysts Jeff Pu, Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman.

There isn’t much information available on what the difference between the two versions will be, but Bloomberg analyst Gurman has previously suggested that the regular AirPods 4 will likely feature noise cancellation and a case with Find My alert functionality, both of which won. are not offered with the cheaper alternative.

Design

With no official announcement from Apple yet, we’re not sure if there will be any major design changes to the AirPods 4, but Gurman has predicted that the 4th generation earbuds will be a design mix of the AirPods 3. and the AirPods Pro 2. That lends credence to the belief that there won’t be any major design upgrades, as the existing AirPods and Pro 2 are already very similar in that regard.

However, Gurman has reported that the design will offer a better and more comfortable fit than previous generations, but hinted that Apple is unlikely to introduce interchangeable eartips with the AirPods 4, meaning it’s therefore unlikely we’ll see active noise cancellation (ACN) shall see. ) on the 4th generation model, but this is not necessarily an impossibility.

The same goes for color. Apple’s signature white finish likely won’t be changed, nor are more colors expected to be added this time, unlike Apple’s AirPods Max 2, which come in a variety of shades.

Functions

So far, there have been no leaks or credible rumors about the AirPods 4’s features. Fans are calling for the addition of volume controls to the touch controls on the buds, which was introduced on the AirPods Pro 2 in 2022, but there’s nothing beyond that which indicates that dreams will still come true.

One thing we can be pretty sure of in the meantime is the move to a USB-C charging case, thanks to the EU’s ruling on ports. Apple has already started equipping its flagship products with USB-C, so this shouldn’t come as any surprise.

Gurman has also hinted that future AirPods will come equipped with temperature sensors, but it’s not yet known if this is something we can expect in AirPods 4 or the third-generation AirPods Pro. Probably the latter.

Software

There is hope that the battery life of the AirPods 4 will improve, thanks to the expected addition of Apple’s H2 chip, which is already found in the AirPods Pro 2. The H2 chip supports Bluetooth 5.3, which is more stable and efficient than Bluetooth 5.0.

Including the H2 chip would make sense as rumors are swirling that AirPods Pro 3 could debut the new H3 chip.

What is the release date of Apple AirPods 4?

There are currently somewhat conflicting reports about this. Ming-Chi Kuo claims that shipments won’t begin until the second half of 2024, while Gurman thinks Apple is gearing up for production in May.

That could mean a September launch, likely alongside the new iPhone 16. Gurman did say that the AirPods 4 launch will be the “largest AirPods launch yet.”

However, Jeff Pu says that the new AirPods could be released alongside the new AirPods Max sometime in the fourth quarter of 2024, meaning this could happen sometime between October and December.

Apple’s next event is on May 7, 2024, but Gurman has already said that Apple is not expected to make an announcement about the AirPods 4 as it will likely be included in several new product reveals that are being pushed back later this year.

How much will the Apple AirPods cost?

With reports emerging of a second addition to the AirPods 4 family, it’s a little difficult to know how Apple will approach its pricing this time around.

The AirPods 3 cost $179 and while Apple rarely drops the price on similar upgrades, it all depends on how much ‘cheaper’ the second 4th generation AirPods will be.

Pu and Kuo have hinted that the cheaper version could hit US stores for as little as $99, which would certainly make Apple’s iconic earbuds much more accessible in a highly competitive market.
